Who We Are
River City Waterway Alliance (RCWA) is an all-volunteer group dedicated to cleaning, restoring and protecting the imperiled waterways of the Sacramento region. RCWA does this primarily through coordinated group events that remove trash and inorganic debris from local waterways and adjacent floodplain and riparian habitat.
Since its inception in January 2023, RCWA has been highly successful in creating positive change for Sacramento’s waterways. In just its first 22 months of existence, RCWA volunteers have performed over 600 cleanups events and removed a whopping 2,200,000 pounds of trash and inorganic debris. These numbers reflect a groundswell of change, made possible by a team of dedicated volunteers. RCWA typically hosts 4 or 5 events per week, and shows no signs of slowing down this impressive momentum.
RCWA works in partnership with public agencies and community groups, raises awareness about environmental damage to our waterways, attracts volunteers, and advocates for policies that provide abatement and restoration measures to improve the long-term ecological health and sustainability of our creeks, streams, rivers and sloughs.
When RCWA was formed in January 2023, its founders brought extensive experience in hosting trash cleanup events, volunteer engagement, social media outreach, and building partnerships with agencies and other community groups. Because of this experience, RCWA was able to hit the ground running when it launched and has been able to very successfully build its capacity and effectiveness.
Public Visibility and Awards
RCWA maintains a very active social media presence (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube) in order to recruit volunteers and communicate to the public and civic leaders about the dire conditions of Sacramento’s waterways and the urgency for more remediation and prevention measures. RCWA also uses these platforms to post highlight photos and/or videos after each event.
RCWA’s work has received substantial print, radio and television news coverage. Additionally, RCWA was presented with an “Environmentalist of the Year” Award from the Environmental Council of Sacramento, an “Outstanding Environmental Leadership” Award from the Sacramento County Environmental Commission, and a California State Assembly “Certificate of Recognition” from Assemblymember Kevin McCarty.
